THE TILT VIDEO - Josh Young + Interview

Josh Young, originally from Corunna, Michigan, moved out to Vista, California a couple years ago to work for Proto.  During that timespan he, along with the rest of the Tilt crew, filmed for their full length video called "The Tilt Video".  Tilt premiered the video at SD7 to a full house in January and is now dropping the parts online.  This week Josh's part is being released, so I hit him up to find out a little more about his part and to see what's up.  Check his full section at the end of the interview.

First question: Your part in the long awaited Tilt Video is dropping, how does it feel?

Pretty crazy, I'm just hyped that the whole video is going to be online for everybody to see. Now I can just tell people to go on youtube and type in The Tilt Video and they can see what we're really about

How long did you personally spend filming for it? Do you think overall the video lived up to the hype?

I would say I spent 2 years filming for my part. Pretty much started when I moved to California. Seeing how there wasn't to much promoting the video it was just kind of a lowkey thing like people knew we were filming but no idea to the extent that we were going. Nobody seen any of the video until the premiere so I was looking forward to seeing it just as much as everybody else. I was hyped on it.

Yeah I was gonna say, this is your first part since moving out to cali. What's it like filming out there vs the midwest?

It's super easy because I pretty much have every spot living in southern California but its hard because so and so did this on it or somebody is at the spot or there are to many people to ride it. In the midwest its like OH SHIT A SPOT?! Pretty damn good chance to that nobody has even touched it or thought about filming a clip on it haha.

There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to each.  You used to be big on being the filmer, I remember when you were such a camera fiend.  And we all know about the tattoo.  But I kinda noticed you took a backseat on filming responsibility during the Tilt Video, why was that?

Being the filmer means your not riding. I out of everybody had I'm guessing the least amount of footage for the video and when your the filmer it's hard to ride the spot. Plus I'm picky about how I'm filmed so if it's going to be filmed bad I'm not even going to try to film a trick. Having responsibilities sucks haha I just want to have fun and ride and not think about anything on trips. But being responsible gets you where you want to be haha

True.  You still are always one of the first ones to be like "yo lets get the camera out" and just taking care of the cameras.  Is this the last VX part we'll ever see out of Josh Young?

Hahaha hell no I got something in the works right now that I'm really hyped on. I've just been trying to have fun and film whatever and not stress as much. But andrew did just give the go ahead to get an xtreme fisheye for the proto hvx so I'm looking forward to filming with that setup!

Fer sure.  HVX/xtreme is a monster setup.  What tricks were you most psyched on in your part?

The first trick in the part is like a warm up trick but I was trying 180 dub whip to fakie out of the manny and I knew I wasn't going to land it so fuxking around I just whipped the bars around without moving my body I felt like. Idk it was stupid bit looks funny to me haha. And the half cab down the dub set. Always wanted to do that. And rincon glad I got that one out of the way haha

Yeah rincon kinda came out of nowhwere for me, that was so gnarly.  One of my favorite clips in the video for sure.

Yea it was like 2 weeks before the deadline and i just was like alright chema lets go to rincon and film a ender haha.

What's that process like for you, filming a super heavy trick like that?

Rub my hands on my pants. Wipe my face with my shirt. Adjust my hat. Wipe hands again then deep breath and send it hahaha it's stupid but if I don't do the extract same thing every time and go from the exact same spot I can't even try to do it haha. It's dumb but true more focus or some shit when stressing while filming something.

Yeah dude, always gotta find that same crack or whatever to start from haha.  So with The Tilt Video, what do you hope kids take away?  What kind of impact do you want it to have on scootering?

I don't really know I just want people to know that if you are serious and you take time and do something right it will turn out good. Have fun and don't copy everybody else. Do what you want to do.

Word.  That should wrap it up, anything else you wanna add?

Thanks to Collin for supporting me the past 5 years. It's been good and only getting better. Also thanks to everybody who came to the premiere in San Diego it was a great night!

And now, scope Josh's section from The Tilt Video-

Josh Young | TILT VIDEO TRAILER

Josh "Young Money" Young is the biggest homie around.  Born in the Midwest, transplanted to sunny California when he took a job working for Proto a couple years back.  While work does keep him busy, he does have access to tons of spots being down there, which is the biggest difference for his part in the Tilt DVD compared to his previous videos.  This is only his teaser, but it should help you get hyped for his part in the DVD.

Tilt Scooters Presents: The Colored Chromo Pegs

Tilt now has colored Chromos and filmed this commercial of Josh Young to promote them.  Short but sweet, I miss seeing clips of Josh so I guess this will have to do for now.  Flatground peg chink at the end was so cash.

Tilt Scooters Presents: Josh Young + Interview

Here it is.  Joshua Casey Young has been working on this edit since November 2010.  After criss-crossing the Midwest multiple times, and even venturing out to California,   Josh finally had enough clips filmed to release this.  Josh has been known as one of the best tech street riders for years now, and this video only solidifies that position.  He worked super hard on this edit and I'm stoked to call him my friend.  I asked him a few questions about the edit, and Tilt.

Jordan Jasa:  So you finally got your edit out, after more than a year working on it. How does it feel?

Josh Young:  Feels so crazy man, like this has been my life the past year. Like every weekend was just, where am I going, what spots am I going to hit. Every single weekend, it was either traveling around Michigan or going on a trip to Chicago or Columubs to get clips. Like I'm not kidding I bet I put 20,000 miles on my car just from traveling so much. But yeah it feels kinda good now that I'm starting over. I'm going to film something good for my blog, LIT so that should be done at the end of spring. Then prob a LIT montage with all the homies.

Gettin buck in the Kasson household.

What's your favorite part about traveling and filming?

Just going to different cities and riding right downtown. Its so crazy pushing around downtown Chicago, LA, S.F any huge cities. Its super rad, not that many people get to travel all over like that. Traveling is the best, It seems like I'm always the one going to peoples house's for trips, but i guess its just becuase everybody thinks Michigan is whack or somethin haha. Best part about filming is busting out the old VX1000 and getting shit done right.

You've been involved with Tilt pretty  much since the beginning. Can you explain how you got started with it?

My buddy Adonnis told me about Collin and how he wanted to start a company and I thought it was some whack kid having his dad make bars or something, but Collin called me and that was I'm guessing almost 3 years ago now. Collin has always rode, and was down for making dope ass parts so I helped him out as much as I could and got on Tilt and helped him put some of the raddest dudes in the street game on the team. I've been on from the beginning so its crazy to see how huge it is now. Its really sick.

How is it being on the team now?

Its good, like always we have the most high quality parts becuase Tilt actually makes the parts in the shop, so you know its going to be perfect if its getting sold to stores. No slacking. I'm always proud to tell people about Tilt and rep there parts. The team is so stacked now, I'm really hyped on all the dudes that are on. Just pretty much a whole street team. Plus I'm pretty close with everybody on the team.

Wallslap in Chicago.  Photo by Dylan Kasson.

What do you think the next year will bring for yourself and Tilt?

Trying to go on more team filming trips, get more photos for ads and shit. Hopefully gettin some fresh parts out. We got some sick SCS's coming out next month. Everybody who has seen them is super hyped on them. So watch out for those when they drop!!

That'll be good for now, if you wanna add anything go for it. Thanks brooo

Just wanna give a shoutout to Collin for always hooking me up, Tommy D for always hooking me up when I need it and giving me a place to stay whenever I go to Chicago, Dylan Kasson for showing me some of the best spots ever and giving me a place to stay when I'm in Ohio, All of my filmers, Jordan, Twhee, Stefan, The Lucky homies, the LIT crew, and anybody who has ever been hyped on what I'm doing!!

Boxes Limited/Lit: Dylan Kasson and Josh Young City Grind Edit

This is sick.  Proto and Boxes' Dylan Kasson tripped it up to Michigan to ride with Tilt's Josh Young, as well as Kelly Zmijewski.  At first I thought they stole the song from my summer park edit but it turned out just to be a crappy remix.  But anyway the riding was dope.  This park seems to be the place to do heelless noseblunt grinds.  Also, word on the street has it that Josh's Tilt edit that he's been working on for over a year is gonna be released soon.  Get hyped for that guys.

Tyler Wheeland and Josh Young Tilt Throwaway

Tyler Wheeland recently released this throwaway edit, which in my opinion has some stuff that I wouldn't consider throwaway. Tyler has come full circle as a rider, something a lot of riders don't do. Started at the bottom, and has worked hard to get to where he is today. I really like this edit.... yes 80% of that is due to the song.

Next up is Josh Young. Another rider who started from very humble beginnings. Wasn't very well known, and progressed pretty slowly early on. That changed quickly and Josh started to really come into his own. His style got better and better, and his riding got really clean. Easily one of the funnest riders to watch now a days. Check out his throwaway below.

Josh Young Sky High Promo

You don't get videos like this very much, so enjoy this one. Josh Young has been in the sport for a veryy long time, and in the past three years he has really evolved into one hell of a rider. This short, but still full of bangers, edit is proof that Josh has no plans of slowing down. I can personally watch the clip at 2:00-2:07 all day. Check out the promo below.

Columbus Trip

The recently de-sponsored Josh Young drove down to Columbus, Ohio this weekend along with Brandon Rowell to ride and film with Spencer Steed and other Ohio locals.  Josh says he's been slowing down on riding a lot...but from his clips in this video, you definitely wouldn't be able to tell.  Brian Amato's clips really stood out for me as well, love his style.  Spencer's part was super good too, 180 whip to slider was so crazy.  Enjoyable video all around from these midwest bros.

BJST

BJST is the product of a week long trip in Ohio with Brian Amato, Josh Young, Spencer Steed, and Tommy Daddono. Everyone has their own part and the video turned out super good. Josh's nose manual at the end of his part took a total of 216 tries...props to him, I wouldn't try anything that many times haha. The parks in this video are Brian and Spencers locals, they def put down some bangers. Tommy does too many tucks, sorry bro =] Haha nahh he has one of the nicest styles out there.

And now here's the video, enjoy.

Josh Young Ipod Check

Josh Young...what can I say about this guy? He watches way too many BMX and skate videos, and pretends to be a total druggie when he hasn't ever smoked anything in his life. And he thinks he can beat a black man in a biggest lips contest (see above picture). Josh is pretty much one of the coolest kids I know in this sport...here's a bit of what he listens to on his iPod. (PS- he turns 18 in a few days, happy early birthday dude.)

1. Better Off Dead By La Peste
This is just a sick song with some kinda crazy lyrics if you listen to them or look them up. haha Plus it doesnt hurt that its the song in th nuge's part in cataclysmic abyss
2. All Eyez on Me By Tupac
Im a biggie fan and one day I though I would give tupac a chance and I found 2 or 3 good songs and this is one of them. Im prob gonna use it in a bmx edit in the future.
3. Blowing Up Fast By Lil Wayne
NOW before you go oh.... lil wayne. THIS is prob one of his best songs. Its good becuase all the fags at your school dont listen to this one. I dont really like lil wayne but hes just so smooth in this one and the beat is sick and its jeff/furby/pat's song in Baker Has A DEATH WISH
4. Rock and Roll Sucide By David Bowie
God this is a good song. Real slow and just makes ya wanna sing it. haha david bowie is the man. i like alot of his stuff becuase its all kind of different i guess to me
5. Young Folks By Peter Bjorn and John
My friend zach loved this song. it was on his myspace for about a year and a half. plus we listened to it in his car alot. so i kinda got hooked on it. haha the whistling in it sounds cool
6. Skeletons Tonight By Thunderlip
I dont listen to rock that much but this band is the best for me. If you've seen rock and roll tour 2 you know what I mean. There just powerful and the dual solo's on the guitars are soooo sick they play!!
7.Sound of Madness By Shinedown
Im not to proud of this one being on there becuase i saw a music video of it on TV and its a radio band. and i dont like that. but yes i do listen to it. i really dont know why... haha
8. A corpse without a soul by Mercyful Fate
Damn this is a good song. the screams and the speed of it just makes me wanna jump off a building or something like that. haha it works so perfectly with the into of cataclysmic abyss also (a foundation skateboard video for you that dont know)
9. Gangster Music By Young jeezy
ahhhh his older stuff. gotta love it. i ride to this one sometimes. we dont drink pepsi we just sell coke. haha love that line
10. Geraldine By Glasvegas
Found this one watchin dak's part in brighton aint ready. really good idk how to explain why i like it. haha i just do

Josh Young Interview

His name is often found on people's "Favorite Riders" lists. He is one of the most original street riders around right now. However dont be mistaken, Josh Young wasn't always the popular rider that he is today. Josh started riding scooters at around 11 or 12 years old. When he first came onto the scene a little later on, he was criticized by a lot of other riders. People would pick him apart for the clothes he would wear, his tight pants, and small shirts. He would get bashed for his lack of spots to ride. Usually filming videos of himself around the outside of his house, stalling pieces of wood and even a tractor. It would have been easy for Josh to call it quits right there, but here it is about 6 years later and he finds himself 17 years old and one of the most praised riders in the sport. Living in Corunna, Michigan doesnt leave Josh with that many people to ride with, atleast not people that ride scooters. Josh is constantly riding with BMXers, which you can easily see in his style when hes on his scooter. He loves doing barspins, lots of fakie tricks, and high speed sliders. He also rides BMX himself and is quite good for the short amount of time hes been riding. Most of that is due to the BMXers that he rides with that completely shred. BMX is a huge passion of Joshs as anyone that knows him well, knows that. He owns over 50 BMX Dvds, and loves filming and making BMX videos for his friends that ride. With this love for BMX you might be wondering why he still chooses to ride his scooter as opposed to his bike full time. When Josh sees a new video on SR, wether it be a good video or a bad one, he pushes himself to ride harder. He feeds off of the riders that impress him and shock him in their videos, riders such as Jordan Jasa and Dan Barret. As for the riders that dont, it still pushes him to want to show them what riding should really look like. He is always working on another video, a video that will once again prove that you dont need to have the newest flip combo, or flyout trick to impress everyone. He simply rides his best, and tries original tricks that you dont see very often. Josh Young has no plans to stop riding scooters in the future, but he does have big plans. He wants to make it to "Scoot Ohio" and ride with some of his favorite guys, he wants to buy a really nice camera and start his dream project which is a full length bmx video with him and his friends, and he wants to turn 18 and get his licence. Josh Young has a bright future ahead of him in whatever he decides to do. Just remember though, next time you see a rider with clothes you dont like, riding in a limited space, and doing tricks that you dont appreciate. Bite your tounge, because for all you know in a few years that rider might turn out to be just like Josh Young, a 100% Boss.

-Steven Tongson
Inward Scooters Team Manager

Interview by Jordan Jasa

How did you first get into riding?

ehhhh. i dont really know, i got a old off brand scooter for xmas wayyyyyyyyy back in the day. i used to ride bikes hardcore in grade school but i sucked so i rode a scooter instead. haha

Did you ever see any of the old RVM movies when you were a youngin?

haha yea man. thats how i learned how to tailwhip. the good old how to's from like brendon smith or somethin like that i think?? but yea i was super into watchin RVM1 when that first came out, only scoot vid ive ever seen

Brendon Smith is an Aussie, I believe. What kindof tricks did you do in your first few years of riding?

ehhh like crappy 180's with monster truck turn arounds, no footers, tailwihps and i would bust out a dub or 2 if the ramp was right.

Enter text here.I remember some videos of you riding some ghettoo setups around your house. Is that all you had to ride back then?

yea pretty much, i would get to go to the local skatepark like everyonce and a great while but i didnt like it back then because it doesnt have many ramps and i sucked so it wasnt fun.

Was there a specific point in time when you started getting good? Or have you just gradually progressed to where you are today?

yea there was. pretty much i started gettin good once i could dub whip. then i started riding street more and going to a indoor park that was a hr away. with the bigger and better set ups i almost had to learn new stuff.

The midwest doesn't have many concrete bowls like California/NW do. Do you think your style would be different had you been able to ride parks like those instead of what you do have? Is your riding a product of your surrounding?

100% yes. anybodys riding is a product of there surrounding. look at J-mac he rode TIC all day long and he ruled the world for a while. Look at McKeen ridin DC all day and now hes powerin down 15 set handrails, i could go on and on but i wont. haha yea im really good at riding bad ramps with holes in them i guess you could say. so to me pretty much any skatepark is a fun one. but if i rode TIC, Woodward, cali parks, im pretty sure i would be wearing knee pads, a helmet, and bossin frosty buttercups like 3 ft below coping allllll day bra! haha.

Would you consider yourself to have a more of a skating or bmx style?

BMX style alllll day. i love watchin freecoaster videos, and ridin my freecoaster on my bike. i try to bring the stuff i see in bike videos into my riding.

I hear ya on that one. Whats the most rewarding thing about riding, to you? Most frustrating?

rewarding would be forsure working on a video and having a trick that im super hyped on in it. then seeing all the comments i get on it. and i really look forward to seeing what a few people say about them, and they all know who they are. haha

the most frustrating would be forsure not landing a trick. and you guys have seen in a couple of my videos i can get a little "aaron ross" as i like to call it about filming. that really only comes around when i cant land a trick i know i can do alll day.

You're one of the few people nowadays riding stock or almost all stock scooters. Why is that?

haha wellll......... pretty much becuase i waste all my money on bike or skate videos. haha i dont know ive broken so many scooters in my life that i dont feel like paying money for somethin i know i will break. but i am goin to make some 1 peice bars in metals class at school thought.

Who are a few of your favorite riders, and why?

1. Dan Barrett- hes always been on top of his game, i still remember seeing the first videos of him in the TPCVJ's and all the stuff he would i have never seen before.

2. Alex Steadman- He is kinda like me but in a dreads rocking, 20 inch bar loving west coast kid. i used to hate his riding but now i love it. i watch pretty much every video hes ever been in or ever will be in.

and last i would say this jordan jasa kid- hahaha i remember watching this video of some tiny kid doing a backwards nose manny and me and my friend went out side for a hr just messin around trying them. ever since then ive watched all his videos and cant wait to see more! midwest alllll day!

That kid sounds like a n00b, psh. You spent a year working on your Basher dvd/minivideo, and it sure paid off. Did you expect to get the response it got?

yea, that kinda died the whole dvd thing. idk i knew that it was gonna be good becuase i didnt put anything out in a while and it had some legit fakie hop stuff and backwards manny stuff i knew people liked so yea i was hyped on the comments and stuff.

That video really put you on people's radars, you've become many people's favorite rider. What do you think of that?

well its weird. like i just saw i post about creative riders and the kid who made it had me on there and was like man im really gettin alright at this whole scooter thing. and i got into the top 5 for most original of 2008 and i was soooo hyped on that!

It was announced today that freestyle BMX is going to be in the Olympics (here). What do you think about that, and do you think scooter riding will ever be in it? Or the X-Games?

ehhhhh im not to hyped on that. its like if they have a skate/scooter/bmx club at school. i would never do that. theres a reason why we all ride what we ride. to get away from all the spandex, mats, gym clothes, pads and sportsmanship. and now there bringing us into the biggest thing ever for everysing real sport in the world?? idk i think scooter riding will never be as popular as bmx or skating. i sound like a jerk right now but im over it. i ride bikes and scooters and i dont want them to turn into BRO sports.

What kind of music do you listen to these days?

i listen to everything, from judas preist, biggie smalls, to Dion and the belmonts and others 50's groups.

How do you decide on what song to put in a video? Especially when editing videos for your friends, do they get a say in it?

hahah naaaaaaa my friends dont care. and im sad to say i get pretty much all my music from my expansive collection of bmx and skate videos. haha. its not my fault that they pick such perfect and sick songs!! and i dont know how i pick the songs, i just go with whatever song im hyped on at the moment.

Why do you use so many exclamation points?

idk. im a pretty weird kid i just do whatever i think is like funny and i like to get my point across i guess. haha to show feeling though a text or message i guess. hahaha

Finish this sentence: My name is Josh Young and...

I like to say alllll day!

That should just about do it, anything else you want to say?

yea id like to say thanks to Steven T for always bein hard on me and always tellin people how im some kind of "Boss" haha jordan jasa for doing this interview, Andrew at scooter resource becuase i would not be doing this right now, or even riding a scooter right now because of him, and last but not least anybody who thinks that im some kind of good rider. if you ride hard and have fun you will get good and you will go far. all day... pop off.
