Dylan Kasson - Welcome to Tilt

Yep, the rumors are true.  Dylan Kasson recently swooped a spot on the Tilt team after leaving Proto.  He's always been a part of the crew, be it from riding in California with Tyler, Erik, Monky, and Josh, or in the Midwest with Josh, Tom, and myself, so it was really a no-brainer.  His welcome edit is SD footage from over the past year.  Word on the street is that he has an HD part as well, to be released as a full part in Tilt 2.

THE TILT VIDEO - Josh Young + Interview

Josh Young, originally from Corunna, Michigan, moved out to Vista, California a couple years ago to work for Proto.  During that timespan he, along with the rest of the Tilt crew, filmed for their full length video called "The Tilt Video".  Tilt premiered the video at SD7 to a full house in January and is now dropping the parts online.  This week Josh's part is being released, so I hit him up to find out a little more about his part and to see what's up.  Check his full section at the end of the interview.

First question: Your part in the long awaited Tilt Video is dropping, how does it feel?

Pretty crazy, I'm just hyped that the whole video is going to be online for everybody to see. Now I can just tell people to go on youtube and type in The Tilt Video and they can see what we're really about

How long did you personally spend filming for it? Do you think overall the video lived up to the hype?

I would say I spent 2 years filming for my part. Pretty much started when I moved to California. Seeing how there wasn't to much promoting the video it was just kind of a lowkey thing like people knew we were filming but no idea to the extent that we were going. Nobody seen any of the video until the premiere so I was looking forward to seeing it just as much as everybody else. I was hyped on it.

Yeah I was gonna say, this is your first part since moving out to cali. What's it like filming out there vs the midwest?

It's super easy because I pretty much have every spot living in southern California but its hard because so and so did this on it or somebody is at the spot or there are to many people to ride it. In the midwest its like OH SHIT A SPOT?! Pretty damn good chance to that nobody has even touched it or thought about filming a clip on it haha.

There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to each.  You used to be big on being the filmer, I remember when you were such a camera fiend.  And we all know about the tattoo.  But I kinda noticed you took a backseat on filming responsibility during the Tilt Video, why was that?

Being the filmer means your not riding. I out of everybody had I'm guessing the least amount of footage for the video and when your the filmer it's hard to ride the spot. Plus I'm picky about how I'm filmed so if it's going to be filmed bad I'm not even going to try to film a trick. Having responsibilities sucks haha I just want to have fun and ride and not think about anything on trips. But being responsible gets you where you want to be haha

True.  You still are always one of the first ones to be like "yo lets get the camera out" and just taking care of the cameras.  Is this the last VX part we'll ever see out of Josh Young?

Hahaha hell no I got something in the works right now that I'm really hyped on. I've just been trying to have fun and film whatever and not stress as much. But andrew did just give the go ahead to get an xtreme fisheye for the proto hvx so I'm looking forward to filming with that setup!

Fer sure.  HVX/xtreme is a monster setup.  What tricks were you most psyched on in your part?

The first trick in the part is like a warm up trick but I was trying 180 dub whip to fakie out of the manny and I knew I wasn't going to land it so fuxking around I just whipped the bars around without moving my body I felt like. Idk it was stupid bit looks funny to me haha. And the half cab down the dub set. Always wanted to do that. And rincon glad I got that one out of the way haha

Yeah rincon kinda came out of nowhwere for me, that was so gnarly.  One of my favorite clips in the video for sure.

Yea it was like 2 weeks before the deadline and i just was like alright chema lets go to rincon and film a ender haha.

What's that process like for you, filming a super heavy trick like that?

Rub my hands on my pants. Wipe my face with my shirt. Adjust my hat. Wipe hands again then deep breath and send it hahaha it's stupid but if I don't do the extract same thing every time and go from the exact same spot I can't even try to do it haha. It's dumb but true more focus or some shit when stressing while filming something.

Yeah dude, always gotta find that same crack or whatever to start from haha.  So with The Tilt Video, what do you hope kids take away?  What kind of impact do you want it to have on scootering?

I don't really know I just want people to know that if you are serious and you take time and do something right it will turn out good. Have fun and don't copy everybody else. Do what you want to do.

The TILT Video- Intro

The TILT Video is finally dropping online, and the first part was uploaded at midnight last night.  This one is the intro.  These guys all worked amazingly hard on this DVD so definitely be sure to watch.  Every week a new part will drop from the video. Check back each Friday at midnight (late Thursday night) to be one of the first to see the parts.

TILT WAREHOUSE VIDEO

This is so cool.  Collin and the boys were able to build some ramps and set em up in an empty warehouse right next to theirs and ride for a weekend.  They enlisted the help of BMX filmer Two Brake Tony and were able to produce this video.  He did an awesome job filming along with Tommy and Spencer.  I'm so bummed I wasn't there, looks too fun.

Erik Feenstra: Tilt Video Trailer

Erik's part is what I'm looking forward to most in The Tilt Video.  The description on Youtube says it best- "Erik floats. Seriously, just floats. Then he goes and hits the gnarliest rail around. You won't hear him, you probably won't even see him. Before you know it he's destroyed the spot and floated away."

So I guess you could say this is the first "official" trailer for The Tilt Video.  Tom is most known for slamming hard, and this clip is doesn't exactly change that rep.  He's got 13 minutes worth of landed footage though, it's gonna be wild to see what fits in his full part.

Inside the Industry: Jona Humbel

As the freestyle scooter industry grows, more and more scooter riders are getting the opportunity to be employed by companies.  It's really awesome to see companies giving riders a chance to work for them, because it keeps more money in scootering as well as gives riders a chance to gain experience in a professional career field.  We all dream of being a pro sponsored rider, but not everyone can or will be able to accomplish that.  Getting a job in the industry is the next best thing.  Whether it's running a shop, operating machines, filming and editing, graphic design, and beyond, there is a wealth of positions that scooter riders fill, and with Inside the Industry, I'd like to find out more about them.

This first piece is with Jona Humbel.  Jona has been an up-and-coming rider for a couple years now (he recently was sponsored by Unfair), and has been employed with Tilt since the summer.  He's returning to his native Florida this month to start college, and so I hit him up to learn a little bit more about his experience with Tilt.

Jordan Jasa:  First, tell us who you are and where you're from: 

Jona Humbel:  My names Jona Humbel, from Largo Florida, but currently staying at the Tilt House in Mokena, Il.

So you work for Tilt.  What's your official job title and what are your duties?

Yup, my official job title is Shop Associate, I basically watch a CNC machine to make sure that each part is properly made with no flaws and/or problems, and while I'm not doing that, I package and label the parts to be sent to dealers all over.  Oh, and I run the laser marker, which etches the Tilt Logo onto everything we make, excluding pegs of course.

So basically you have a hand in almost every part Tilt makes, awesome.  How did you get this position?

I met all the Tilt dudes at SD7 including yourself, and Collin Snoek hit me up a few weeks later about filming/working in shop after I graduated. It just wasn't something I could turn down, working with one of the most reputable companies in the industry. So 3 weeks after I graduated I packed up and flew out here.  Oh yeah, I guess I'm also the Filmer for Tilt, kinda. Hahaha

So have you gone on filming trips with the team?

Yep, over the summer the whole Tilt Team was in Chicago, we packed up a 15 passenger van and road tripped it to Columbus, Ohio where Dylan Kasson toured us around his hometown. We also got some filming done in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs the two weeks everyone was here, as well as capture the 3rd Chicago street jam. It was for sure the highlight of the summer.

Gotta agree with you there.  What kind of filming setup did you work with?

We had Standard and High Def setups on the trip, the SD setups being two vx2100s with 2 mk1s, and the HD setup being 2 Panasonic HVX's with a Century Xtreme fisheye.

I have to ask, can you shed any light on Tilt's upcoming full-length?  Did you get to film any bangers?

Ahhhhh, I can tell you from filming the dudes and seeing everyone’s footage, and with the dude that’s handling post-production, that this will be all around the best scooter video created. So if you need a reason to be in San Diego this January, #TheTiltVideo is the reason.

For sure.  What would you say to kids who want to get a job in the scooter industry?  Any advice?

Try to make good impressions and the people you want to work with, and try to find your niche. You have to be able to offer a company some form of skill that you're passionate about.

Tilt Box Jam 2013

The night before the Chicago Street Jam, Tilt invited a lot of homies to come sesh the box and rail at the shop.  Guys like Matt McKeen, Logan Fuller, Kevin Austin, and more were there to shred, eat some bbq, and have some good times.  I can personally say that it was really awesome, big props to Collin and Tilt for putting this on for everyone.

Tilt Scooters Presents: The 2013 Chicago Street Jam

The jam this year was kind of a bust with not being able to ride certain spots (being kicked out of Picasso without any tricks even going down, Monroe gap being blocked off by construction).  Still, a ton of pro and am riders showed up, and they all threw down.  Shoutout to Josh Smukal for killing it all day.

Tilt Scooters Presents Jordan Jasa

Jordan dropped some new footy, finally. Easily some of his best footage yet. Every clip was legit. If more riders took the time to find spots for their edits, and learned to film solid lines, we would have a stronger street scene for sure. Loved the banger too, you don't see too many riders throwing 540s down decent gaps and sets.
