Matt Stevenson Ipod Check v.2

Among the many bands and artists Matt Stevenson enjoys, Miley Cyrus happens to be one of them. If you know anything about Matt, you might think that he likes her for reasons other than her singing...However, this is not the case. Matt happens to be an avid viewer of Hannah Montana, and has seen the Hannah Montana movie over 20 times. Whenever she visits Matt's native town of Kapuskasing, Canada for a concert, you can be sure to find Matt screaming with the rest of the 12 year old girls in the front row. Don't get me wrong though, Matt listens to a lot of other singers besides Miley...Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, and Lady Gaga, for example. None of which, funnily enough, appear in this Ipod check.

1. Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)- The Tragically Hip
Really good Canadian band. They actually have a song about a hockey player from the area I live in who played for my favorite team, so yeah, definitely like their music a lot.

2. Aluminum Union- Strike Anywhere
Why is it that a band Greg got me into always comes up? I really love punk and this band definitely pulls it off. Just love to shred on my skis (hello there is snow in Canada) listening to this shit.

3. Pour Down Your Sunshine- Bob Marley
To put it simple, I fucking love reggae. It's so chill and shit. My dad was a big Marley fan and so am I.

4. Father Time- Texas in July
Brian Boston mentioned this band on SR before so I checked it out. Turns out they are a wicked awesome metalcore band from PA. That's why he likes it I guess. But if you are into metalcore, check this band out, they will not disappoint.

5. South of Heaven- Slayer
So happy this came up because I have been listening to it a lot lately. The guitar just has such an evil sound. Plus it's Slayer. All you kids need to stop listening to just rap and get some metal on your Ipod.

6. Fifty-Mission Cap- The Tragically Hip
As if this song came up. This is the song that I mentioned earlier. To pretty much sum up what it's about, Bill Barilko was a hockey player for the Leafs. He played 5 years, winning 4 cups in the years he played. He scored in overtime of game 7 to win the cup. This was in 1951. He then went on a fishing trip with Dr. Henry Hudson. On the way back, the plane crashed. Anyways, the Leafs didn't win another cup until 1962. That same year, they found Barilko's body.

7. That'll Be The Day- Streetlight Manifesto
This band is my favorite third wave ska band. Not their best song (my personal favorite is Point/Counterpoint) but it is really good all the same.

8. Every Time I Look For You- Blink 182
My favorite band. I was so bummed when I didn't get tickets to see them this summer. I guarantee that everyone who has heard them likes at least one song.

9. Outlive the War- Jedi Mind Tricks
I knew we couldn't avoid the rap in this Ipod check. Jake (Spicy Mchaggis) mentioned them in the SR chat before so I checked them out. They are actually really good.

10. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band- The Beatles
Everyone loves The Beatles. If you say you don't, you are clearly lying. They are the most influential band to ever exist and are amazing. Seriously, download, I mean buy The Beatles Discography.

Josh Toy Ipod Check

(Josh and his wife, April, at their wedding.)

Josh Toy. You all know the name, which has been synonymous with Razor for years. A seasoned veteran at the ripe old age of 24, Josh has traveled all over the world to ride for his sponsors. Living in Anaheim, CA means going to places like Japan, Wisconsin, and the East Coast takes a long time. One of the things that helps make the ride a little more tolerable for Josh, is music. Josh has his own custom 8 gig Ipod Shuffle...which I told him to turn to shuffle, and list the first 10 songs that came up. Here is Josh Toy's Ipod Check.

1. Alexisonfire - Emerald Street
I got turned onto Alexisonfire when I met up with Chris Daigle after he moved to San Diego, CA with his now ex-girlfriend. It was shortly before the Open Ground Comp in Reno. We ended up taking Chris to the Open Ground Comp, via my wifes hot momma mini van, haha. We blasted Alexisonfire the entire way there, and pretty much the entire way back. Good times.

2. Asher Roth - Lark On My Go-Kart
Him and Eminem have been two of the select few I heard on MTV and thought were actually talented. Asher Roth gets compared to Eminem because he is a white rapper and happens to kind of sound like Eminem back in the Slim Shady days. But he's definitely unique. One of my favorite hip hop artists now.

3. Circa Survive - Act Appalled
Circa Survive is super legit. I have been a fan for awhile. If you're into bands like Saosin or Chiodos, you will enjoy this band. You can also hear them in the BLT videos.

4. Lower Definition - To Satellite
I've been an avid fan of Lower Definition for about ten years now. They are signed to Ferret Music now, same label that bands like In Flames, Elysia, The Devil Wears Prada, and many others are signed to. They are a band from San Diego. My first show I saw them at, was actually my first ever show. I was excited as hell. I came mainly to see them, but they were also playing with Yesterdays Rising. After that show, I was really stoked on them. I also used some of their old music, pre Ferret signing, in KC Cornings RVM4 part.

5.He Is Legend - Don't Touch That Dial
Southern hard rock at it's best. One of those extremely underrated bands. I have seen them live a couple times and they are still considered one of the best bands I've ever seen. I remember the last show I went to, a guy in the crowd threw a bottle of water and it hit the lead singer in the head. They were in the middle of "The Seduction" and the entire band stopped. Stood on stage, not a word spoken, lead singer looking at the lead guitarist with a "okay, that just happened?!?!" look on his face. After a good 20-30 second of silence and fans booing the person. Everyone thought this was their way of saying fuck you, we're done. They randomly started back up off a hard note mid way through I Am Hollywood. Sickest fucking thing I have ever seen live, haha.

6. Outasight - Brand New Day
Really good underground white hip hop artist from New York. He just signed to Asylum/Warner Music. I've been a fan for a few years now. He looks nerdy as shit, would never think he was a hip hop artist. Then you hear him, and he's incredible. Found him on MySpace Music while browsing for good hip hop to possibly edit with.

7. The Devil Wears Prada - Assistant To The Regional Manager
Amazing band. And this just so happens to be my favorite song by them.

8. The Black Dahlia Murder - I'm Charming
Great metal band. Many nights of drinking with friends and listening to this band.

9. The Rise Of Science - Dark Eyes Dreaming
Fairly new band to me. They added me as a friend on MySpace and I have been listening to them ever since. Kind of reminds me of Circa Survive in a way, just not such whiny vocals.

10. Metallica - Dyers Eve
I've been listening to Metallica since I was about four, haha. My father has always been a metalhead at heart. We had long drives across the country for national races in BMX and Metallica was one of the most listened to bands on those trips. So I grew up on old Metallica. In my opinion, there have only been a handful of good songs from Metallica after The Black Album. Dyers Eve is one of my favorite songs from Metallica also.

iPod Check with Jordan Jasa

(Guest Intro by Matt Stevenson)
Jordan Jasa , or Jordan Scott as he is known to many in the SR chat, is one of the most technical riders out there. Although he loves scooter riding, there are other things in life that keep him content. Jordan enjoys playing soccer, moderating scooter forums (according to facebook), and of course music. Now as you know, music is a big part in riding as well as in life. It gives us the extra boost we need to land those steezey tricks or in Jordan's case, those smooth as butter nose manuals. I not asked but told Jordan to sit down, put on his iPod, and tell us all the first 10 songs that pop up. Here is his list:

1. Fame- David Bowie
Anarky 2 song. David Bowie is pretty awesome. Listening to this song obviously makes me think of Kenny's part, and pretty much the whole video. Its a classic. You should go listen to this song and/or A2 right now.

2. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor- Arctic Monkeys
The Arctic Monkeys are like a Brit pop group. They have really upbeat songs that just make you happy. Love this group.

3. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)- Journey
Journey...it seems like everyone knows "Don't Stop Believin'," but couldn't tell ya a single other song by em. Which is too bad, since they really are a good band. This song is pretty dang epic. I wanna say I heard it in a skate video once? Not sure about that, but its a song I could def see in a hammer video.

4. Natural Anthem- The Postal Service
Pretty much anything by The Postal Service/Death Cab/Ben Gibbard I can listen to while chilling. The lyrics don't start till about a minute left in the song, and its really interesting to listen to the song build up until they start.

5. My Generation- The Who
The Who is definitely up there as one of the best bands ever. This is one of my favorites from them. This song is one of The Who's most memorable, most recognizable. Pretty much any young person can relate to it.

6. Down on Me- Janis Joplin
I downloaded some Janis Joplin music on a recommendation from Margaret. Took awhile for me to get into any of her stuff...guess its just not exactly what I was used to hearing. She def puts a lot of emotion into her music, which is awesome.

7. Andy, You're a Star- The Killers
The Killers are an awesome band. Hot Fuss, the album this songs comes on, also has two songs that were featured in two of my favorite videos of all time- Matt Andrus Sponsor Video, and The 2008 Josh Young Combo/Tech video. Love the whole album, and this song.

8. The Girl Is Mine (w. Paul McCartney)- Michael Jackson
Despite the kind of sick person he was, Michael Jackson was really an amazing artist. This song also features Paul McCartney, who happens to be my favorite Beatles member. This song is just pretty soft and mellow, but positive and easy to listen to. I like it.

9. Don't Bring Me Down- Electric Light Orchestra
I downloaded an Electric Light Orchestra album after becoming obsessed with their song, "Mr. Blue Sky." I then proceeded to become obsessed with the band for a few solid weeks. They have a really unique sound, and have some catchy songs, "Don't Bring Me Down" being one of them. You should check it out.

10. Another Brick in the Wall- Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd is pretty much legendary. I downloaded their most famous album, "The Dark Side of the Moon" after a suggestion by Sean Kane. I was pretty into that stuff, so another friend told me to listen to a different album, "The Wall," which is where this song comes from. Amazing stuff.

Aaron Bransdon Ipod Check

Among the interests of many Australians, in addition to kangaroo rodeos, shrimp on the barbie, and cussing, includes music. Aaron Bransdon, NSW, is no different. Aaron describes his taste in music as, "Everything and anything." Looking through his Ipod check seems to confirm this statement. Below is a list of the first 10 songs appearing on Aaron's Ipod when turned to shuffle.

Daddy Cool : Placebo - One of the rare, old school songs that would always be on the radio in the car when i was younger, almost one of those "grown up with this song"

Such Great Heights : The Postal Service - A song i have as a result from a brief Death Cab for Cutie infatuation. Turns out i used it for the South Coast '08 edit, first time i rode with Geordie Mac :)

Sweet Disposition : The Temper Trap - One of the newest bands i've started to listen to, extremely chill, Australian band. Everyone give them a listen, they're win.
Our last days of Children : Explosions in the sky - What's an ipod with quality instrumental music? Usually do homework, write, think, whatever listening to this music, always helps calm and ease me after whatever.

Float On - Modest Mouse : This song is pretty monumental really, my first foray into a band suggested to me in the SR music section, they really are quality.

In the water I am beautiful - City and Colour : Possibly my favorite solo act, Dallas Green, he is usually the lead singer for Alexisonfire, a hardcore (?) band, but this acoustic side project proves Genre crossing can be done, and done well.

Pressure - Lupe Fiasco ft. Jay-z : My favorite song presently, Lupe fiasco is a lyrical genius, and flows like nothing else. I've never seen anything in Jay-z, but i'm starting to grow accustomed to his style.

Mr Brightside - The Killers : A long time favorite of mine, love how easy this song is to sing along to.

Send me a postcard Darling - The shocking blue : This song essentially shows my love for European riding. Featured in Siign i believe, one of the greatest feature length videos released.

Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi ft. MGMT and ratatat : The greatest song left til last i guess. How you could get a better combination of artists into one song, i have no idea. Kid Cudi's flow, MGMT's harmony on top of a Ratatat beat, never ceases to amaze.

Josh Young Ipod Check

Josh Young...what can I say about this guy? He watches way too many BMX and skate videos, and pretends to be a total druggie when he hasn't ever smoked anything in his life. And he thinks he can beat a black man in a biggest lips contest (see above picture). Josh is pretty much one of the coolest kids I know in this sport...here's a bit of what he listens to on his iPod. (PS- he turns 18 in a few days, happy early birthday dude.)

1. Better Off Dead By La Peste
This is just a sick song with some kinda crazy lyrics if you listen to them or look them up. haha Plus it doesnt hurt that its the song in th nuge's part in cataclysmic abyss
2. All Eyez on Me By Tupac
Im a biggie fan and one day I though I would give tupac a chance and I found 2 or 3 good songs and this is one of them. Im prob gonna use it in a bmx edit in the future.
3. Blowing Up Fast By Lil Wayne
NOW before you go oh.... lil wayne. THIS is prob one of his best songs. Its good becuase all the fags at your school dont listen to this one. I dont really like lil wayne but hes just so smooth in this one and the beat is sick and its jeff/furby/pat's song in Baker Has A DEATH WISH
4. Rock and Roll Sucide By David Bowie
God this is a good song. Real slow and just makes ya wanna sing it. haha david bowie is the man. i like alot of his stuff becuase its all kind of different i guess to me
5. Young Folks By Peter Bjorn and John
My friend zach loved this song. it was on his myspace for about a year and a half. plus we listened to it in his car alot. so i kinda got hooked on it. haha the whistling in it sounds cool
6. Skeletons Tonight By Thunderlip
I dont listen to rock that much but this band is the best for me. If you've seen rock and roll tour 2 you know what I mean. There just powerful and the dual solo's on the guitars are soooo sick they play!!
7.Sound of Madness By Shinedown
Im not to proud of this one being on there becuase i saw a music video of it on TV and its a radio band. and i dont like that. but yes i do listen to it. i really dont know why... haha
8. A corpse without a soul by Mercyful Fate
Damn this is a good song. the screams and the speed of it just makes me wanna jump off a building or something like that. haha it works so perfectly with the into of cataclysmic abyss also (a foundation skateboard video for you that dont know)
9. Gangster Music By Young jeezy
ahhhh his older stuff. gotta love it. i ride to this one sometimes. we dont drink pepsi we just sell coke. haha love that line
10. Geraldine By Glasvegas

Ipod Check with Hep Greg

When it comes to music, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable than "Hep" Greg Cohen. Greg's music collection, which includes over 17,000 songs, and almost 75 gigs, has pretty much every single band you've never heard of before. So naturally, I figured he'd be a good person to do this Ipod Check feature with. Greg is definitely the person to consult if you're trying to find new music. Here's a taste of what he listens to.

1. "Bad Day At The U.N." by Guignol. really good Brooklyn based band. Klezmer/Gypsy style music, very chaotic sounding. I really love them, I've snuck into a few bars to see them play. :)

2. "Gangsters" by The Specials. One of the most influential ska bands ever, also one of my favorites. one of the first bands to infuse the energy of British punk into the groovy sounds of Jamaican ska, thus spawning the '2-Tone' wave of ska music.

3. "Heartilation" by Andrew Jackson Jihad. Phoenix, AZ based folk punk band. really energetic, catchy (mostly) acoustic punk band. Really good.

4. "Failing, Flailing" by Streetlight Manifesto. Pure musical genius. Easily the greatest 3rd wave ska band ever. Incredible composing, and wonderful melodies mixed with post-punk/hardcore hints.

5. "False Evidence Appearing Real" by Folly. probably my favorite hardcore band EVER. they blend post-punk/hardcore & ska together into a really technical, super awesome sound. Too bad they broke up. :(

6. "Prince Nez" by Squirrel Nut Zippers. Lovely little band hailing from North Carolina. Quirky, clever 1920's sounding jazz/blues, with a modern sound. really unique band, definately worth a listen.

7. "Not Now" by Blink-182. Honestly, if you say you don't like them, you're a liar.

8. "¡¡NOBLE STABBINGS!!" by Dilinger Four. Loud, fast and completely kick ass. one of the best punk bands ever. Super energetic music that you just wanna sing as loud as you can.

9. "Heart Attack '64" by The World/Inferno Friendship Society. Aaah, The Inferno. So much to say, not nearly enough time to explain. You should listen to them.

10. "Walking Is Still Honest" by Against Me! Coincidentally, my favorite song ever. Against Me! puts so much energy and heart into their music; it's almost an unexplainable expeirience seeing them live. This song is easily my favorite song of all time.

Ipod Check: Matthew Stevenson

Music is a big part of most peoples' riding, and lives in general. Matthew Stevenson of Canada is no different. I recently asked Matt to turn his Ipod to shuffle and give me the first 5 songs that come up. Here they are:

1.Kickstart My Heart- Motley Crue
Song gets me pumped to do pretty much anything. The Crue is where it's at

2.Bleed Black- AFI
Great song by a great band

3.Who Do You Believe In?- Tupac Shakur
Seriously a lyrical genius. Rest in peace Young Nigga, There's a heaven for a G(line in Life goes On)

4.The Warmth of You- Fishbone
So yeah, Greg told me to download some Fishbone and I might say, it's really good. Check em out.

5.Penny Lane- The Beatles
The most influential band in music. So many good songs by this band

From a CS video I edited, Tom Waterfall sent me it

I ride alone a lot of the time since Martin doesn't anymore, and I can't always get a lift to ride with other people. I find listening to music makes riding on your own more interesting, since you don't have anyone to talk anyway; it gets boring otherwise.
