Come at Me v2. (By Jordan)

I don’t usually bother to back myself up when hated on for my opinions, but after I posted the Dan Barrett video last night, there was a bit of a backlash (48 comments now, as well as everything on Facebook). So I’d like to take a moment to tell you why I made the comments I did, and a little bit more in general about my opinions on videos.

First of all, I was not “hating” on Dan. I have no problem with him going out and drinking, the majority of everyone does it, and he is perfectly legal to do it as well. The fact that I put the video on Inside in the first place shows that I did like the video, and everything I say about the video is constructive criticism. You are sadly mistaken if you think I’d post a video that actually sucked. Obviously I thought Dan’s riding was amazing, like it always is. He’s been one of my favorite riders pretty much as long as I can remember, and has always been a nice guy.

Why did I choose to address the party thing with his video? Why don’t I say anything about Elyts videos, when they have party clips? Perhaps it just pushed me over the edge. Not only did the party clips bum me out but the song, and other riders (because I thought it would be a solo edit of Dan) ruined the vibe for me. I do not want scooter riders to be seen as Mac Miller college partyboy type people, which is the vibe I got from the video. As far as Elyts, thats all they’ve ever been since the beginning so I never took their videos seriously in the first place to even bother commenting on it. Its the same way with Stan Smirnoff, he is known just as much for his smoking habits as his high airs and transfers (he had weed leaves on his signature wheels for God’s sake), so nobody thinks twice when he has a clip of him smoking in his videos.

I can understand the point that party clips help show who the rider is in a video. But if nearly everyone does those things, does it really show who you are? If what you are outside of riding is a weed smoking, alcohol chugging partygoer (not saying thats what Dan looks like, I’m speaking generally now), is that something you want to show people? You want to show you and your friends? Do something more creative, more original. Party clips are like the next cheesiest b-roll footy you can have after bird footage and cloud time lapses. Show another hobby you have, or you at your job, any kind of random moment that happens while out riding even. In Proto Catalyst there was a clip I believe of Sanchez flipping onto a bed in a hotel. Thats the kind of thing thats cool to watch, not a bunch of people just drinking beer.

Please, if anyone still has a problem, leave a comment here or send me a message on Facebook. Thanks to all three of you who will actually read and understand this.

  4. hi jordan i TOTALLY agree with you, if people want to smoke drink, thats their choice but why even put that in a scooter video. and i watched it to see dan not his friends, why dont they post it as a single clip on their youtube or make a throwaway of themselves, good riding tho :D

    1. Because DAN wanted this to be a weekend video for us, not just about him. And all of the footy was on his filmers camera, do you really expect us to beg him for our footage?

  5. It's not a trend.... it's what people do. You know me Jordan... on a personal level... we've been on tour together and everything. Name one time where I wasnt trying to stir up excitement with random people and asking "where the b!tches at?!" People tend to gravitate toward things that they like or have in common with. It just so happens that you dont like to party, i respect that... but dont bad mouth it. Not to sound arrogant + no offense but with vids like yours... you make me look cool bro ;) we all need eachother to co-exist.

I understand this may take some getting used to.... but I'm from New York, fast pace life, all about flashing lights, trending topics, stock excahnage, moolah and all that other stuff. Dan just so happens to be from Phili... which is also a dense fast pace area. You are from,,,, well somewhere a lot more laid back so thats why your videos are the way they are and ours are the way they are.

It's not an "ELYTS" thing.... or a "trendy" thing.... it's a lifestyle... that you just so happen to not be apart of or exposed that much to so you cant relate and it annoys you. Tell you what tho, if you are ever in Cali you can definitely come chill and have yourself a "Mac Miller" , "Lil Wayne" , Music Video episode with your boy ziggy ^_^

PS: I personally like to see you ride tech, never had anything bad to say and appreciate everyone for who they are. I know you're a writer but hating is not "constructive criticism"... if it were, you would supply our veiwers/readers with a solution in order to get something constructive out of it. Take Care bro... Peace.

I agree with EVERY single thing Zig has jsut pointed out. How can that be a constructiv criticism when you start it by saying : " The whole putting in drinking/smoking/partying clips thing is so lame though"

I mean WTF ? You are a writer, let's even say a journalist and in Journalism, Info equals Power only if it is used a certain way. You coulda introduce this video explaining why some people might be offended by this kinda clip but you chose the personal non constructiv stuff which led people to think " Jordan sucks "

And like Ziggy said : it's not a trend but a LIFESTYLE. Just accept it or don't post it. I can't believe there is ton of great video that has just come out you could have posted, only spending a quarter of all the energy you've just spent justifying yourself in a long post where the majority is not willing to back you up on this.

    Jordan,
You can't expect everybody to think like you, maybe Dylan Kasson as I really wouldn't picture him thinking the oposite way than yours on this ( but I could be wrong ^^ ). Scooters is what it is you can't change that. Google bone deth, metal bikes, or even Animal and check out there videos. It's just too funny to see what your reactions would be after watching their vids.

Anyway. the last paragraph shows again your personal opinion on videos which again can't be the same. Not everybody has a job or the chance to flip onto a bed in a hotel room. And personally the last thing I'd like to see in a video is the rider other passion like hunting, or fishing, but if it is , fuck it cos scooters is what it is. Accept it and to be wrong sometimes.

Were all getting older, were all from different societys and we all like to ride how we want and make videos how we want. Fuck the rest and live life. Thug/Hesh/DGAF Life

  11. That is somewhat true @Jordan Jasa, but as Zig Short said, its a lifestyle. Every single edit of a rider reflects not only his riding, but also presonality and lifestyle. You never see anything, that wouldnt be proper in Elyts videos, nor you could see anything inproper in Barret's video. I am not going against your opinion or anything, but as long, as the videos dont show f*ckin and drugs (Stan Smirnoff is in my opinion nothing else then junkie that has to be high to ride). I will definately write an article about this too and redirect people here. (www.scootforlife.com)
Lets just keep the emotions low, because as Zig Short said, we need each other to take the sport to a higher level! Adrian

  14. Do I REALLY want to get into this argument.. Hmm.

What I'll say is that just because we all ride scooters, doesn't mean we all live the same lives, believe the same things, and do the same things when off our scooters. Everyone is entitled, and completely allowed to live the way they want, and portray that in ANY video they choose to. If they are trying to get a certain reputation by showing themselves doing things in videos, that may be questionable to some, that is their choice.

That being said, there is also nothing wrong with someone voicing their opinion on the matter. Not everyone has to like everyone and what they do. Some people choose to actually make that known, and toss out their opinion. Though in this sport, made up of immature fucks, people end up taking it too seriously, and bam. We have this post.

  15. Drinking, smoking, partying, riding scooters - that´s lifestyle. If you don´t like it, it doesn´t mean you have to hate it. Just do your thing and people will understand it. We are young so during the day we ride, but in the night we still have energy for the party. Try to live with that, peace. ELYTS life.

  16. When you have a job besides scootering... i think you start realizing how important chill is aswell as scootering and how lucky we are to do that. So sharing it is a good thing. Working all day with daily routine people... makes that lifestyle even cooler! We can't force people to grow up faster and hell yeah, stay in your dreams boys because real life's quite a mess. I used to be thinking like Jordan a few years ago and i totally understand your reaction. Same shit happened to me when i talked trash about Addict... and in the end, they were right about the lifestyle, taste it and it changes your way of life( still everyone can't necessarily afford partying a lot). One thing we all got in common is that we're all scooter junkies and there will always be retarded fights like that... which increases your stupid traffic stats!

    2. To be frank, Steven is the only person who posts unbiased articles. As well as actually posting an article amongst news, rather than a short paragraph blog entry. The only people you ever see Jordan plugging on this site are his sponsors and homies. Then you get these posts, defending his "opinions." Because he put people on blast. And considering he's done nothing but start drama, maybe he could get it through his thick skull that maybe he should keep it to himself before he turns into a Dylan Kasson clone. You guys know my stance on the situation, with certain individuals and their recreational activities. Just recently, it started another situation involving you two that also blew up. Your opinions, are unwelcome. And nobody gives a rats ass if you get "bummed" on something. Just because you know how to edit, and think you're the "core" and "true" riders in this sport. It's all an illusion. You're going to look like a bunch of pricks that hate on anything different than what you want perceived. You're selfish. Crying over everything like a child. And I still find it funny that you say you have nothing against a certain someone the. Follow it with a "but his riding was amazing." As if it makes it all okay, justified. But it's not.

      Delete
    3. I am not and never will I claim to post unbiased articles...this is a blog that I started, so naturally I will include my own opinions on subjects. As for Stan, hes obviously an idiot and its not okay that he does what he does to the extent that he does it (hope you got that). But it would be pointless to even bother pointing it out, yeah its a double standard but there is literally nothing anyone can do about it.

Bottom line is that if you don't like what I post on Inside, you don't have to read it. If you do, thats awesome, but if you don't, I could not care less. I don't think you really read and understood what I said in the first place anyway...

    4. I like how you try to make the sport out to be more mature by hyping up style and street, yet when there is a few clips of alcohol use you cry about it man. You may as well get used to it Jordan, in a coupe of years the sport is going to be full of people over 21. Alcohol doesn't necessarily give the sport a bad image. Skateboarding is full of piss heads, watch King of the road or a creature video. oh and posting up fucking stupid poll questions pisses me off too. OF COURSE NOONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT MONGO.

Jordan tells us that hes not hating on the whole partying thing, just hating that partying is in a video that he was expecting to be all Dan. Which is almost the same as being Rick Rolled, you may have clicked on a video and were expecting something different so you are pretty mad but that doesnt necassarily mean you hate the song, which in this case is the partying.

I do think that this is constructive critism. Jasa obviously likes every video he posts. So if he thinks there is a way to make it better, hes obviously going to say it. It is his site after all.....

  34. I think people are getting more upset with each other, companies, videos, and random posts lately because 75% of the scooter world has become totally GAY (for lack of a more descriptive term).

I'd rather cry about people over-hyping bri-flip combos in videos than beer pong. Launching out of 10-foot quarter and doing a twenty-trick combo and then barely landing in the tranny is about as lame as a skateboarder launching out of a 10-foot kicker and flipping his board a hundred times.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I usually have nothing against lifestyle footage in videos but this was obviously a bad example of using these clips. I mean, they left a total "where did that come from?" and "was it really necessary?" feeling, at least for me. Everyone liked James Brady's video because it was well-directed and entertaining; it's safe to say those clips really added the vibe and they had nothing to do with the actual promotion of drugs and that sort of thing, I believe. If you put them out of the video - it won't be the same. If you put out Dan's partying clips - no one except Dan's freinds would be greatly disappointed.
Maybe Jordan's description on Dan's video was a bit too harsh, but seriously, if you are using lifestyle clips in your videos, please do it carefully, especially if you are representing a company. Don't forget that this video will be watched not only by your friends (who would definetely enjoy this footage) but by the whole community. I myself sometimes edit these mixed partying/riding videos but I never download them to my youtube channel cause I am sure that's not what my subscribers want to see as they won't get our inside jokes and won't share the mood me and my friends had back then. That's it.
However, if you manage to create a really entertaining video with partying clips - you are welcome, I'd like to see how you are getting down, boys :)

Don't get me wrong, I totally understood what he is trying to say, he just said it the worst way ever " lame" and "corny". You don't even need to be a journalist to understand how not constructiv was his original post.

Yes I expected my self too to only see dan'z clips, i happened to be positively surprised to see he included some of his friends that might not be as famous as him. When you know how famous is dan, putting his friends in one of his videos is just the coolest thing don't you think ? So at the end I don't know how you can be disapointed by that.

Jordan, it isn't just your blog anymore eventhough you are the one that started it. Brands pay you so that they can have their shit posted up here. That's where I would really love to witness how constructiv you can be cause there is probably more negativ points to point out in most vids posted from brands advertizing on your blog than riders editing shit for themself ( which is truly what riding is all about : doing shit for yourself ).

That's where I say Info = Power. Don't know who said that up in these comments but you are said to be the most respected journalist or something like that. I'm telling you how to run your blog, but if it's your blog in which you want to express your opinions like you said, then DO FOR EVERYBODY. And i'm sure the dan drinkin thing will be the least of your highest criticisms in the sport. If you can't do this, then you are in the other category of the initial journalist's role which is " not to know but to just share the info", it's either you stick to this ( neutral way like : thecomeupbmx.com ) or you critizes everyone on a constructiv wxay. There's no inbetween otherwise your blog will get a bad image.

And apart from Elyts video, I haven't really seen scooter edits including partying footage...

There is no problem with putting drinking in the video, at least he's doing it responsibly. He has the choice to put this in the video, and if you don't like it, get over it. A few things though, maybe the video should be renamed to "Dan and Friends" or something along those lines, the title now is a bit misleading.

  55. I agree with Jordan. Dan is awesome but drinking and smoking B-roll is the most immature and tasteless thing to put in a video.

  56. I'm sorry to everyone who is offended by this video. JD and Zig thanks for taking your time and sticking up for me. JD "nailed it on the head" This edit was with me and my crew because they dont have opportunities to get exposed as much as I do. More videos will be coming out this year of me and my crew and what I have coming out this year and it wont all be drinking in my b role but you might be seeing it again.

You should be sorry for them instead, show'em whatever you want to show. That's your video not theres the community will watch it anyway even if there is party clips in there. I hate Magray's new hair cut tho :p. Party time in Montreux Dan like I told you we rent a 130m² appartment with balcony and swimming pool inside. Everyone is welcome to come down there and chill after the MONTREUX.
