Now for the top 5 Finalists. Your essays will be posted here on Inside-Scooters for all of our readers to read, and from there, THEY will be voting using the Poll at the top of Inside-Scooters.When the Poll is closed, the results will be passed on to Phoenix, and they will go through them and the 1st - 5th place names will be listed shortly after on Inside-Scooters.

ReplyDeleteIn my personal opinion it is a horrible idea to have this be a poll based contest. First off it is very easy to exploit and vote over and over from the same computer, and second it just turns it into an internet popularity contest. If it were truely an essay contest then the entries should be judged by a single person, based on all aspects of the essay, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and of course the topic of the essay. One of the entries in the top 5 should not even be considered a serious entry. It is full of spelling and grammar errors and submitted by an ALREADY SPONSORED PRO RIDER and I am suspicious if they picked they entry based on name alone. I belive personally that Tom from Phoenix should be the one to read the essays and judge the contest himself. That would make it unbiased and maybe Tom would take some of the advice of the entrants.(Assuming he hasn't already read them) Thats my take.

I honestly feel that if you start your essay off with "hoenix" that you shouldn't have even made it into the top 10, none the less top 5. I mean, come on. Its not a scooter/ popularity contest guys...its a essay contest for grammar, content, and I think this needs to not be the official votes.
ReplyDeleteI support Stevenson as much as I support me. Its obvious that we both put a lot of work into our essays, and the fact that they might loose to an essay with "i" and terrible grammar just grinds my gears.

ReplyDeleteAs for the best essay there, its Stevenson. Grammar is NOT EVERYTHING, when it comes to writing an essay. You can have the best grammar in the world but your essay can be costructed horribly and be as boring as watching paint dry.
I already said which essays I like, and I will be talking to Chris about how to choose the final results..
I personally love my essay. I think I put a lot into it, just as much as Stevenson. The other 3 however, I feel are not even on the same caliber as Matt and I. Its w.e though. I didn't do it really for the prizes as much as I did it because I love writing. Either way, Im satisfied. ( 1st place would be dope though ) ahaha

ReplyDeleteI'm not saying you didn't put a lot into it... But I mean just look how you ended it? There's no conclusion at all dude.. it just kinda... ended.
In any piece of writing, what is at the end of the piece is what is seen/read last by the reader. Meaning a strong concluding paragraph is pretty key in an essay. Matthew Stevenson had a great one. That's why I think he should win.
I still really liked almost all of the essays though. Yours included.
I hate to disagree but grammar is everything. You don't have good grammar then people stumble over your writing and it makes it annoying to be trying to actually read it.

I didn't even read Ladams or any of them because of how badly all of them were started and how boring and direct they were. It was very difficult for me to skim some of them, these probably should have been judged on by a person related to English like a teacher, in my opinion.
And Ladam does not need to win at all.

ReplyDeleteFor one reason or another, these are the final 5 Essays. IS does not and didn't decide that. You can sit and bitch about each essay all you want, it's not going to change the top 5. Grammar is everything when you are writing an essay for school or college. However this is NOT something made to be judged on by an "English Teacher"...This was made for our community...which unfortunately most of them are young kids.

ReplyDeleteHey Guys - I am bummed that there is so much turmoil over this contest. When Chris (Gascoigne) came to me with this idea, i was pretty impressed with the concept and i told him to go for it. We got over 80 submissions and i asked him to weed through them all and give me the top 20.
ReplyDeleteI read them all, as did my wife and Kim who does our website and we all picked our personal top 10 out of those 20. Chris then took all our lists and made the final choice on the top 10 to
be included in the poll. We all thought it was a cool idea to let the community choose who would get the top 5 spots. As it turned out, Steven told Chris that the IS system would only allow 5 for the poll.
Ultimately, We (Phoenix) were just trying to do something fun for the community and offer some free parts for participating.
I will say this; even though there are some absolute standouts in this, these really are the 10 best. If we do something like this again, i hope more of you will participate and give us even better essays to choose from.

ReplyDeleteI just want to personally thank Phoenix Pro Scooters for the Essay Contest. Both my young boys 9 and 7 spent lots of time writing their essays. (Trust me spelling and punctuation wasnt stellar) but we enjoyed listening to what they had written. I hope that Phoenix continues to do the Christmas Essay Contest and that more people will participate in the future. Winning a new deck would have been real nice but the real reward was watching my boys write about what they are truly passionate about SCOOTERS.. In my house we had a tie for 1st place.. :)

However, I think there should have been an age group thing, because I can almost guarantee that I'm about half the age of most these guys. I also think that one on the Matthews should win. Alright ladam. Except that there are some haters that you shouldn't ignore. People that are actually making legitimate points about how unfair, and really, completely undeserving you are of the prize. Telling people to vote for you on facebook doesn't help the cause either, and saying that other people are doing it still doesn't make it right.

ReplyDeleteHey guys.... I'd just like to thank IS and Phoenix for putting this on. I'm not the best scooter rider, but my goal is to get my name out into the scooting community. This has really helped, as I'm pretty young and unknown. I'd also like to thank Keelan Scarth, possibly the craziest and stupidest scooter rides i have ever met, for laughing at me and making me want to show him up lol. Expect some vids of me, if everything goes well. Gracias amigos, and p.s. The essays were really well written. Even ladams if he edited it a little.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Sal cheated. Telling people about his essay is not cheating. He didn't tell people to vote for him, he just told people about the contest. He did nothing wrong. I'm sure there are other people doing the same thing. All essays are great though don't get me wrong.

ReplyDeleteHey. I don't that sal directly cheated, but I am pretty sure that someone cheated for him, without him knowing. The kid is innocent, I believe it....but the fact that he got 1,000 votes in like 4 hours doesn't sound that legit. I think the votes + writing + legitimacy should be sent back to tom floyd, and that he should ultimately decide who placed 1-5 with all factors in mind.
