5Starr Scooters California Dreamin Tour

The 5Starr Team has a lot of really talented riders, and recently went on a tour across California visiting various spots and parks, as well as numerous dealers of their products. They were lucky enough to once again have Olivia Monks behind the camera taking care of the filming and editing, and this edit came out superb.

Brandon James in California

If you're looking for riders with style, look no further than the Teams of District/Eagle. Coedie Donovan, Chris Hart, and Rory Coe to name a few. But if I had to pick a rider with one of the best styles in the game right now, it would go to Brandon James no doubt. He literally has riders trying to imitate his style all the time, and that's no easy job. Kid is as smooth as butter, and makes the hardest tech tricks look effortless. Check out his edit from when he was down in California.

urbanArtt California

This summer the whole urbanArtt crew traveled to Cali to film some tricks.  Everyone threw down in this but to me Georgie stood out with some of those last clips of his.  Overcrook that hubba was insane.  And we get to see Eric's hurricane cover shot, pretty crazy.

California Photo Blog pt 1

So Tommy Daddono and I flew out to California this week to stay with Tyler Wheeland.  The week started out with Tyler and Stefan Hefner picking us up from the airport and riding downtown LA at 1 am.  This photo was taken the next day, when we went to Vista to ride with Andrew Broussard, Josh Young, Jon Reyes, and Tyler Bonner.  Vista is so good to ride, pretty much everyone rode and got clips.

We were on our way to a ditch spot when Jon and Tyler pulled off the road to check out this rail spot.  It took a few tries for him to pull this double peg, but he slid pretty much the whole thing, and tricked out.  You can check the footy in the upcoming Elyts DVD.

On Monday we went to this gap over a rail.  Erik Feenstra trucked and 180 whipped over it in his Socal Stuff video.  So while the bar was set pretty high, Tommy was able to get a cool clip and picture before we got the kick.  Twhee with the photo cred here.
This is another spot from Feenstra’s socal video.  In that he double peg to back lipped it.  Tommy rides no pegs so he opted for the hurricane.  The rail was already taped up in a few spots, its gonna need a massage after being shredded by scooter riders.  Tyler again with the photo.
This photo was taken at this banks/ditch spot in Laguna Beach.  Pretty much everything about the spot is really gnarly.  I got worked trying to get a line here but ended up sticking this half cab heel into it.  Tommy also filmed a clip, and Tyler again shot the photo.  This is also the best spot if you’re trying to go fast and powerslide your wheels away.

On the way home from the Laguna banks Tyler remembered this pole jam and we stopped at it.  The pole is definitely taller than it looks in this picture but that didn’t seem to be a problem for Tyler.  Tommy also blasted the sickest footplant fingerwhip off it but you’ll have to wait to see that footy..

This is just part one of the trip blog.  Tommy unfortunately left tonight but I am still here till Friday night, and we have pictures from Tuesday and Wednesday.   For the record, Tyler is filming for a full length with Stefan, and Tommy and I are also filming for our own.  More on those projects in the future.

Jackson Manzie in California

This is whats up.  I'd have to say after watching this footy that Jackson is the most legit Australian in the game.  I don't usually preach what I think should be done in this sport on Inside but I will tell you right now that if we want real respect from skateboarders we need more riders whom ride like this.  Not hucking a million different scooter flippy whippy combinations.  Raw street riding, and well-filmed videos documenting it.

Ramp Rats Upcoming Competition Article

On August 22nd, the Fuzion, Raise the Gnar Tour makes it's second stop. The first stop was on the East Coast in New York, at the Xtreme Wheels Skatepark. However, they are now going all the way across the United States to the West Coast, in Petaluma, California to the Ramp Rats Skatepark. So let's find out about the owner of Ramp Rats shall we?

Ramp Rats was opened by a Bmx'er by the name of Mike Krnaich. Mike lives in Petaluma, and is a Pro Bmx rider, a Wakeboarder, and a Bass Fisherman. Mike first started to notice the sport of scootering when he saw some local kids riding at his skatepark. After watching them for a while and seeing their dedication and skill, they earned his respect. It was around that time that he started thinking about holding scooter jams or competitions. To the left is a picture of Mike riding at RampRats.

They had a small jam earlier this spring. Which is most likely going to be outdone by their upcoming competition. A lot of riders are planning to show up and represent the Nor Cal scooter scene come the 22nd. The Nor Cal scene is extremely lucky to have someone like Mike here. The fact that he opens his park doors to us, and to anyone who is respectful and dedicated says a lot about who he is. Mike's most memorable moment so far involving scooters, was when he saw a 12 year old kid, do a backflip over their box jump. If you asked him who is favorite riders are, his answer is simple. He respects anyone who is out there having fun doing what they love.

For the future of Mike's involvement in the sport of scootering, he will continue to do his best to help push the growth of the sport. By putting on more jams, and he really hopes that this Fuzion tour, becomes an annual thing. Future plans for the Ramp Rats skatepark include a complete remodel in the winter. Which will include a bowl, and a step up. I think all of us need to be thankful that we have Mike backing our sport, and supporting us the way he is, has been, and will continue to do in the future. So from Inside Scooters, Thanks Mike, and to everyone at the Ramp Rats competition on the 22nd, Good luck from Inside Scooters!

A few of the riders scheduled to be there are:

The RAD Crew
Jake "Spicy McHaggis" Pellegrini
Rayan Simian
Gino Troian
Jay Magee
Eaglesport US Team Rider Jason Beggs

About Californian Riding

The following was written by Tommy Napolitan, and posted on SR. I am reposting because I agree with him, and want people to read this.

Ok first off i dont want to start an argument i am just stating my opinion because its been bothering me for a while now.

From what i've seen upon finding SR is that almost every single kid from California rides EXACTLY THE SAME. There are seriously only 5 riders in my opinion that ride different and unique. Everyone else rides with the same "style" as another. I honestly cant stand to watch vids put out from there unless its from those 5 riders whos riding i like. Because i know i am just going to see the same stuff except maybe with an extra whip or bar into it. Or see the same skateparks that are in every other vid.

Also there is no street put out from Cali except from Addy and Ostrom. Everyone else tries to put out "street vids" but its generally just some little spot and the kid is wearing shorts and a helmet. I wish they would close all skateparks in Cali to scooters so people could go out and learn there ticks on kickers, flat, street instead of just saying "Well what park do you wanna ride today?" Also theres really no ballsy riders out there, maybe 2 or 3 but other then that no one is taking necessary risks to try to push the limit on tricks and such. Like i said before not throwing an extra whip or bar after your insane scooter flip at a skatepark. But rather people trying to do bigger rails, sets, and adding stuff to them. Like honestly what So Cal rider is throwing down dope street vids?

Idk the vast majority of the "California scooter scene" is all the same in my opinion. The sunny weather, wearing shorts, doing bri flips, wearing helmets everywhere, not being able to hit a legit rail, having atleast 37 concrete skatepark clips in a vid.

Once again just my opinion.

________________________________________________

My 2 cents- I honestly think nearly every Cali vid is the same. It gets rather boring, actually...the part that bothers me the most is that they live in Southern California, THE place for street riding. And they don't take advantage of that...I know if I lived there I would be riding street all day every day. I think that a lot of those guys take what they have for granted, and if they were put into a different environment, where there aren't any parks, or street, they wouldn't be riding much longer.

Cory Vanlew Interview

Cory Vanlew. Dont know the name? Dont worry you will. Cory is 18 years old, He was born in Orange County and currently resides in Temecula, California. Which is an area known for having some of the sports top riders. He started riding scooters only 2 years ago at age 16, and has since found a new passion. Apart from scootering Cory also does a little skating, and snowboards in the winter. However when it comes down to it, he chooses Scootering above both. He loves the fact that its a fairly new sport, and is constantly trying to change peoples opinions on how scooter riders are seen. Cory sees himself as a street rider, he loves hitting handrails, ledges, and just going out and riding street. Dont let this fool you though, It isnt uncommon to see Cory riding a skatepark, and airing out of quarters and over hips with overclicked turndowns, lookbacks, and tuck no handers that rival even some of the best "bmx style" riders today. Apart from Scootering, Cory has another big passion in life. That being his love for Graphic Design. Which started back in his Sophomore year of Highschool. Next semester he will be going to college to become a graphic designer. Despite this Cory will still ride, and one of the main things that is keeping him riding, is Matt McKeen. Cory is constantly being inspired watching Matts riding to push himself harder as a street rider, and considering Cory was recently sponsored by Inward-Scooters, you can expect just that.

- Steven T.

Interview by Jordan Jasa

You just got on Inward Scooters. What were you feeling when you learned you were picked for the team?

I was real excited to finally be aprt of a "legit" team that is already making parts and is planning on doing big things and progressing the sport.

How does it feel to be on the same team as Eric Ostrom, Matt Ogle, and everyone else?

I'm very happy to be on the same team as Ogle, Ostrom, You, and everyone else i think i kinda suprised everyone with my sponsor video, cause noone thought i was that good. So overall im glad to finally be reckonized on the same level as them.

What do you think is going to happen in the future with the team?

Well from what iv'e heard from Stevn t. the team manager Inward=Scooters is going to be doing big things, releasing new products and the possibility of a team video should soon all be in the works.

Once you get your Inward parts, whats your setup gonna be?

Inward bars 21.5 high 18 wide, Fsa Unsealed headset, Old A headtube, Inward extreme offset with .120 wall threaded,Proto wheels or eagle not sure what im going to run yet, Old A brake, Reinforced B deck, Custom Grip artwork by me. Thats about it...

You're obviously a very heavily street-influenced rider. Besides McKeen, who influences you?

Lets see.... Big Ron is probaly the other big influence

Cali has a reputation of kids riding nothing but parks and doing a lot of scooterflip stuff. Do kids ever give you crap for riding with a street style, for being different?

No nobody gives me any crap for it actually i'm the one usally tellin people to learn to ride some ledges and quit using your scooter as a nun-chuck lol. But i guess as long as everyone is havin fun i could care less how you ride hahaha

The sponsor video you posted on SR has gotten a lot of good comments, 4 pages right now I think. Did you expect this kind of reception?

i mean not to sound cocky or anything but i did expect to get alot of good comments maybe not that much but yeah i was plannin on recieving alot of good feedback and i thank Nick Darger for editing and filming the video cause it turned out great!

Who or what got you into the sport?

well one day i went to woodinville skatepark when i used to skate. i decided to bring my scooter and see what i could to at the park. i got there and the RAD crew was there and after i saw SLAM do a fingerwhip it was love at first sight! ahahaha

Would you rather ride a street quarterpipe or a nice stairset with a rail in a park? Why?

I'd rather ride the nice stairset with a rail in the park because thats more what i like to do. even tho im a "street" rider i gain all my confidence to do street hand rails on park handrails. They are always better cause you dont have that Sketch factor and you usually have perfect run ups and no big cracks to deal with.

I see what you mean, practice in the park, then apply it in the streets. So how did you get into graphic design? What do you love most about it?

started out in high school and took a computer graphics class and was stoked on photoshop and been doing it ever since. i love creating art its just like a strong hobby i want to make into a career.

You said in your thread something about 720's flat. Are you serious?

of course you will see either in the 951 video or on the inward team intro video thingy. Was bored one day and tried fro like an hour straight. but i got em.

Wow, McKeen status, literally. What kind of music are you into?

anything except like screamo death metal and country. hip hop is my favorite tho

Where do you see yourself, and the sport, in 5 years?

well hopefully the sport gets big in the next couple years cause ill be 24 and ill probably be ready to start a family... so ill keep scootering as long as the sport doesnt die out and grows to what skate boarding has become.

Thats all I got. Any thanks, etc?

Yeah i'd Like to thank Inward-Scooters for taking the time to make the team riders first. All my friends and family who supprt me and my riding and everyone who gave me some positive feed back on my video. =]
