Well, The BMX Company "Colony" isn't too happy about this. So they're trying to do something about it.
Basically, Colony is having a "program" if you will. It's called the "Colony Trade in a Scooter Program" Their goal with this, is to not just keep scooters off the streets, but also keep them out of all skateparks in Australia. Please click the link below and read the piece to learn more.

Now there's a few ways that we as a Sport can look at this. I am choosing to look at it this way. We are growing, a LOT. To the point where in Australia the riders in BMX who can't accept that, are trying to go to such lengths to stop this growth, and these kids from doing something they love. They are trying to instead steer them away from scootering, and into their sport of BMX. Kind of makes me wonder, how long before we start seeing efforts to keep the sport of Scootering down here in the USA? Or Europe?
To me it shows no class and a complete lack of respect to our sport, but hey...we're all used to this aren't we? We ride scooters, and we face adversity for it ALL the time...I hope this doesn't truly affect any Aussie riders out there.

he now throws his skateboard at anyone who scooters. its okay cuz he gets free ones.....
all it means is that almost every person at the skate park thatdosent ride scooters completely and utterly hates them

We are out there putting our bodies on the line the same as them...Yet we get this kind of blatant disrespect.
You are saying that they are not trying to stop the the growth of our sport? You must not understand what growth is.
Growth is not the Top riders in this sport, such as Max and Ryan.....Growth of a sport, means we need NEW people to come into the sport. THOSE are the little kids, that Colony is aiming at, and trying to turn against scooters, and into Bikes. Bikers and Skaters alike are realizing now that our Sport is in fact a Sport, and is growing to the point where they now need to stoop to these levels to try and prevent that growth.
I have never, and will never have a problem with skaters and bikers. Any TRUE skater or biker, that is skating or riding bikes because it is something they truly love and are dedicated to. Will not, and does not have a problem with scooter riders doing the same thing on a scooter.
Oh, and I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm just stating the way I see things. But you saying they're not trying to prevent the growth of our sport, and telling me to grow the fuck up...Is wrong on many levels.

I think this could create a few problems for colony, there is enough little kids getting in everyone's way on a scooter, and by the looks of it... They'll soon be doing the same on a bike. ReplyDeleteWe all know scooters are here to stay, and Colony are hipocrits, they are helping build a street course for bikes AND scooter riders at a popular park. They are only giving themselves a bad name by not accepting all sports. On the up side any advertising is good advertising, so they are letting people know how popular scooters really are. Could backfire and kill their own rep.

ReplyDeleteNow imagine that all these "little kids on scooters" they are complaining about. Were "little kids on bikes"....I bet you Colony would have no problem with it.
Take a little kid who is at a park for his first time, and doesn't understand how it works with snaking and all....And he will do the same shit on a bike, skateboard, rollerblades, flamingo, etc....that he does on a scooter.
They're making it seem as if taking a little kid off a scooter, and onto a bike, is going to suddenly make him learn how to be respectful at a skatepark.
Honestly, this whole thing isn't even about them trying to stop little scooter kids from snaking at skateparks...Its just them trying to convert scooter riders to bikers, in an effort to keep us out of skateparks.
The sport from here on is just going to get bigger. Your going to get the occasional kid who got peer pressured buy Colony BMX who will trade his scooter for a bmx at His local skatepark. There arrogance from a '' So called '' Proffesinal company in their own minds is amazing. Colony is afraid of change, well BMX in general. Thier afriad and wont accept change. I think the possible introduction in coming years of scooters into not just BMX & Skating competitions will influence the way and the respect they have for the sport. <3

Honestly Colony can a suck a fat truly. Why should we give them a scooter which is more then likely worth more then there parts and lasts longer. Colony are just trying to get a profit out of all this, Why should we give up something we love just because the BMX company's are going broke because scooters have over run bmxers at nearly every park. This really shows how low some people are to try and stop people from doing something they love to do. i think they should just face that people have changed and are switching to cheaper and really a better sport for people who wanna get out and do something. Colony should be worrying about there sport not going trying to stop people from doing theres. Colony you should be ashamed about this you fucking dogs, its a pretty low act and seeing that scooter riders didn't have a problem with bikers until now.

Just like you said Steven, we've all had our fair share of "SCOOTER FAGGOT!" comments, and boards being chucked at us. I see Colony's campaign to literally "destroy all scooters" as no different at all. Haven't we all accepted we're not the most accepted sport out there? Some BMXers like us and some don't; it's the truth of it. And guys don't worry to much about this. I guarantee you guys that the only people who are going to do this are bikers buying a complete Colony bike and then going down to their local Kmart to buy a $100 Madd Gear to send in for some extra parts. And in the end doesn't that just SUPPORT Madd Gear and scooters in general? Colony...you fucked up.

I welcome the invitation because I'm willing to bet that the only people sending scooters in, that BUY THEIR PRODUCTS, will be BMXers just looking for free parts, so they send in shit scooters just to rip the company off for easy parts. Because they most likely haven't seen it before, and they realize that no matter how easy it may look compared to a bike, every sport has it's progression and skill level. Doesn't matter if it's a 30 lbs bike, or an 10 lbs scooter.

ReplyDeletecolony sucks part wise, some biker had a colony fork for 2 days and snapped the part where the axle sits. next day someone breaks a week old colony wheel, this mainly because they would see 70/100 kids as being snakes. if the goverments could create a litle kiddies track for children under 10, it would make it safer for them or have a no under 10 year olds rule for skateparks. colony just needs to deal with scooters being a cheaper and easy sport to learn compared to bmx. half of the kids (between 12-15) who ride bikes can't do much and when you compare that to a kid with a scooter who's been riding the same amount as the bmxer, the scooter kid can do so much more. if this is jus a plan to get rid of scooters or try and re-sell the scooters I don't care, caus no one in frankston or around here buys colony parts cause there not worth it.

We aren't talking mad shit on bikers. We are talking shit to the bikers who DESERVE to be looked down upon. Due to their lack of respect to anyone off a bike. And there are a ton of them. And given this situation, I think we earned the right to talk shit on a half assed company such as Colony. Instead of wasting time and money into this ignorant cause, they could be out doing research and development to make their cheap products they sell better. This cause is petty, immature, and shows how low the owners and associated individuals are. this is sick! it totally shows that the sport is growing, and getting huge FAST! love it. haha i'm just taking advantage of being in the US while it's still small. Cause as of now, there are no "no scootering" signs like at any of the spots we go to, it will always say "no skateboarding" and "no biking" but since every normal person still thinks scooters are just toys, we can ride some of the sickest spots!

I can ride my scooter on campus (my college doesn't allow biking or skating or longboarding!) so that's sick, plus there's sick spots on campus. 2. I love riding bikes, and a scooter is like a tiny bike that you can whip around way faster! it's awesome. I LOVE SCOOTERS

ReplyDeleteWe all understand that we are one of the un-respected sports out there, just as inline was until it roughly caught a break and inline is still 'hated' by a lot of BMX and skateboarders!
But we all know why we ride, its because we enjoy it,don't care what others think & are not going to be influenced to do anything else.
I still remember clearly when it was myself, Coedie, Jordan Bates, Arron Brand & James Barret riding around Manly and we were copping shit left,right & center from skaters and bmx riders, and to this day not a lot has changed, but all sports go through it. Im just happy that we are all still invloved in bmx or scooters in one way or the other.
I do hate that certain people that skate or bmx think they are superior to us because of there sport like serious wtf ha ha?
This is a joke on Colony's behalf, it just shows there fear or scooters and they are clearly taking us as a threat so there trying to 'wipe out' scooters from skate parks, FAT FUCKING CHANCE guys!

This also happend to scooters in early 2008 just after scooters were invloved in the PlanetX games in Melbourne, Australia, when RAZORUSA and MICROEUR flew over to aussie.
An Australian skateboard Mag called SLAM stole photos of myself and Coedie from myspace and printed them and just RIPED on scooters. they were pissed because scooters stole the show at the PlanetX show in 2007 ( a few months earlier )
where 350,000 people were watching and NO ONE care about skateboards because they had seen it before.

Basically all Im saying is THIS SHIT HAPPENS and will continue to happen for a long time, we all stick it out though because we care about OUR sport because its what WE want to do! FUCK anyone who thinks other!

It's so funny how pathetic people are nowadays. Like in my area, at my one local skatepark I have, their are two PROFESSIONAL bikers that go there. Yes, pro. Cory Foust, and Keith Schmidt (aka baby keith) and I ride with them every once in a while and they have NO problem at all, with me riding a scooter, because they know I ride a scooter for the same reason they ride a bike. It's hella fun to do, and it's what we love to do. If you're truly mature and respect that, no matter what someone does, as long as they're having fun with it and show they really love what they do, you won't care. Colony bikes, they can eat a dick. They're not bikers, they're pussys.

ReplyDeleteThis always happens with a progressing sport, i used to be really into the whole mountain bike scene, but whenever i rode at my local i felt really alone, you know, no one else to ride, and now i ride scooters, its like a big family. Sure there are a couple of people who ruin the image of scootering, and that sucks. The only thing we can do is keep the sport alive, keep encouraging the little kids at the skate park, if there in the way, ask if they can move or better yet, ask if they want to join in.

ReplyDeletefuck colony bikes, i used to sort of like this company. i am a scooter rider, and a biker. but i do choose to scooter more. and i can honestly say that when i show up to a skatepark with my scooter, and ask some biker to ride their bike, that i am better than the majority of the bikers at the park. this is completely immature of this company. colony bike parts suck to begin with. completely unlegit company. im even going to request that my local bike shop, discontinue to carry colony bike parts. and spread the news to all of my friends. colony your going down the shit hole.

What's really funny about this whole deal is how everyone is bent out of shape over this BMX deal. All you have to do is go on SR or Ridewire and you'll find a huge group of haters and the haters are scooter riders. Scooter riders who hate scooter riders... Scooter riders who hate the entry level scooter riders. Scooter riders who eat their young and chance them off. Sure its bad what Colony is doing, but open your eyes, it's being done within your own sport and it needs to stop.

ReplyDeleteGood work guys and gals (and Steven) in getting the promo pulled, it was the worst thought sales offer I've ever seen. To me it was basically crazy and destructive on so many levels especially when it was obvious it could end up inspiring conflict in the parks.
ReplyDeleteTo let everyone know it was the scooter community as a whole who got it removed through viral social pressure and not us although being our scooter used (the legal side would have taken time).
100% quality sites like Inside Scooters and the integrity of the scooter communities passion show just how far we all have come as a serious sport and not to be taken lightly by anyone. :)

ReplyDeleteIn my country, Slovakia, too. It´s just still growing. No one can stop it. It´s MUCH BETTER than BMX and a BIGGER FUN! I´m disgusted about Colony BMX and this campaign. I think BMXERS should get off the parks!
IDK if anyone else has noticed this yet but colony put up an apology to the scooter community on their website. http://www.colonybmx.com.au/news/2010/12/trade-in-a-scooter-promo-re-launched/. however, i was reading some of their other news posts and they constantly diss scooter riders. Colony, like a lot of people, are unable to look past their own sport with an open mind. I say FUCK THEM. Thats their own problem. We just need to keep riding and stop letting them get to us because thats exactly what they want.

Wow. I think that is rediculous. In my city the scooter scene is just growing and all the skaters hate us on the other hand the BMX riders are cool with a couple of us scooter riders mainly because we don't get in the way and actually ride. I just think most BMX riders and skaters think of us as little kids that sit around and get in the way but that will change soon.
ReplyDeleteOne of my really good friends rides a bike, He gave the point that all of us are just enjoying the ramps what ever sport and why some feel that they should have all the fun is beyond me but colony is going to far with cutting scooters in half, really some one took the time and money to make this. Let us all just ride.

our sports are no different, from scooters to skateboards to bikes to blades,
we all know the feeling of landing a brand new trick, all know the feeling of going out onto the streets and coming home sore and tired but smiling because of the amazing time we had. we all share the same anger when its our 100 attempt at the same trick and its still not happeneing, and we all know the high 5's that go aound when that trick gets landed. the feeling when our favourite rider/skater realeses a brand new edit and how stocked and motivated we get after seeing it.

im a skateboarder and i skate very regularly with a good friend who scooters, but alot of you cunts fuckn dont even get how to not be snakes at parks, and how to go about things at parks, and definetly the majority of you show little respect to where the roots and the history of street extreme sports came from. yous dont know the history and the bullshit that skaters and riders have gone through over the past 30 years(even longer) just so kids can persue to skating the street and having these parks built to keep kids from the streets. yous take shit like this for advantage, why the fuck do yous think everyone hates yous? its like yous do a little kiddy fad just because yous can tailwhip or barspin in the first day, and then get better at it and better at it because its easier to show off...i dont hate scootering my friend is a legit street rider and barely touches a park and when he does he has respect from skaters just because the respect he gives us.

Now, i know all this is going down in Australia, but if it's happening there why wouldn't it be started here in the U.S.? SOON? Honestly, I have NO problem with BMX, because I used to ride myself with a Friend named Trey Turner who's going big in Cali soon, and I love the sport, and he even records with me and my friend zack sometimes, Has NO problem with us shreddin with him, now thats a cool rider for ya. But thats pretty Lame about Colony. To me it shows no class and a complete lack of respect to our sport, but hey, we're all used to this. We ride scooters, and we face adversity for it ALL the time. BUT, we don't go make a big deal about it, were just doing what we love.
